Meet The Breeder

Hello! Welcome to Starflame Standard Poodles. Our names are Matthew and Elijah, and we are working together to build our program. We are a small preservation breeder located in Central Minnesota. We are proud members of the United Poodle Association. Standard Poodles are thought to have been originally developed as retrievers. However, throughout history they have had many jobs and are recognized today as all around very versatile dogs excelling not only in retrieval work, but also in a host of dog sports and other jobs. Our goal with our program is to preserve the breeds original function, today's versatility, and the conformation that allows this breed to excel in these areas. The structure must be there to support all of the wonderful things this breed can do. If we want poodles that can last all day in the field, trial every weekend, and excel in conformation; we must produce the structure to support it. In order to evaluate our dogs and make decisions that support our goal, all of our dogs and bitches will be titled in some combination of hunt tests, conformation, and other performance sports before being considered for breeding. We believe that health is a vital aspect for overall well-being of the breed in general, but also for success as retrievers, pet dogs, sport dogs, and show dogs alike. For this reason all of our dogs and bitches will have the following health testing as recommended by the Poodle Club of America and United Poodle Association before we will consider them for breeding: -OFA hips or pennHIP -Eyes -Thyroid -Cardiac -Von Willebrand Disease I -Neonatal Encephalopathy with Seizures -Degenerative Myelopathy -Progressive Retinal Atrophy, Progressive Rod-Cone Degeneration -Progressive Retinol Atrophy, Rod-Cone Dysplasia 4 -Dayblindness We plan to breed multicolored and solid colored standard poodles. We believe multicolors have introduced a lot of diversity to the breed, and we acknowledge the excellent quality of solid colored standard poodles being that they have decades of development behind them. We believe solids and multicolors have strengths to contribute to eachother and for that reason we will not restrict ourselves to just breeding one or the other. Much more important to us than color is workability, structure, and temperment. First and foremost we plan to breed to preserve function and versatility. However, we recognize that the versatility this breed offers makes them a great candidate for service work and has landed them a spot in the "fab 4." Service dogs have a serious job and since no breed is specifically bred for service work, we cannot guarantee that the majority of our dogs will be appropriate for service work. However, given the versatility and past service work success of the breed it is not unreasonable to assume that we will occasionally produce dogs appropriate for the work. If you are looking for a service dog prospect please feel free to reach out to us and we will work together to see if any of our planned litters at that time may have appropriate temperment and drive and then evaluate the litter to see if any individuals show promise. Due to the overall structure of the breed, we will not place service dog prospects with handlers looking for weight-bearing mobility tasks. PUPPY RAISING: Puppies will be raised on Puppy Culture including ENS, ESI, and foundational crate, leash, and potty training. Puppies will also be started on grooming desensitization. Puppies will be dewormed and started on their puppy vaccinations. Puppies will have docked tails and intact dew claws. Puppies will be sent home with a toy that has been with the litter throughout puppy raising, a supply of their current food, a copy of their pedigree, and their paperwork including a copy of the contract. Puppies will go home at 10 weeks earliest. We hope to have our first litter on the ground late 2026. please feel free to reach out at anytime if you have questions about our program or are interested in a show or sport dog, retriever, service prospect or pet. ***We will never breed designer breeds or merle "poodles" or sell to anyone who plans to breed designer breeds or merle "poodles."***
