Apple River Working Dogs (ARWD) is a family owned kennel in rural Iowa. Owned by Travis and Marie Appel, Marie has been involved with dogs since she was a teenager. She started training dogs for 4-H in 1997 and grew that love to compete with a Black & Tan Coonhound in WCCHR and UKC events. That dog even won Showdog of the Year for the Foggy Bottom Coonhunters Assoc. in 2003 when she was just 19 years old. Under the guidance and mentorship of an experienced breeder, Marie, co-bred her first liter in 2019 under the name Rock Creek. Marie realized there was another GSP breeder using that name in Iowa and decided to switch to Apple River Sporting and Detection Dogs. However, in 2024 we decided that was too long and changed the name to Apple River Working Dogs. ARWD strives to produce health-tested, driven and versatile dogs for all things "nose": detection, hunting, tracking (human and deer) and nose work/scent work. Our first litter of GSP produced one explosives detection dog, a UBT - I dog, and two others in training for tracking. Our second litter has produced two Person Borne Explosive detection dogs, a TSA dog, a Narcotics Dog, and Penn Vet Working Dog Center's first GSP. Two from this litter have been held back for breeding. Our third litter produced three puppies in hunting homes, 5 were purchased by a private company for detection careers, and one has been started on human tracking and HRD. We routinely hold back and train puppies for detection work. These puppies are available as started green dogs. These dogs have not been exposed to any training odors, but have solid environmentals, great foundations in toy drive and searching ability.
