This powerful and dignified breed is extremely loyal and regal. The Rodesian Ridgeback is known for its history in tracking and baying lions in Africa, though it never kills them. The Rhodesian Ridgeback is appropriatley named as they are from Rhodesia and are one of the only animals in the world to have a stripe of backwards hair on their back resulting in the characteristic ridge. Their stunning appearence is not only from their ridge but also their powerful look and bold expressive face. The Rhodie is an independant breed who loves being affectionate to their family, but also enjoys their alone time. This sight hound has a strong prey drive and will that doesnt quit! Training a Rhodie takes a strong hand and lots of practice early on.This powerhound weighs in between 70 and 85 pounds, and seem to increasingly be getting bigger. They come in the color 'wheaten' which can be a mild tan all the way to a striking deep red. They can posess small black accents as well has have small amounts of white on the chest and feet. Ridgebacks also have two nose options: black, the most common, and brown. The Rhodie is extremely faithful to their people and make very good guard dogs. Trust takes time to establish with the dominant personality of a Rhodie, so we especially like them for people who have a fair deal of dog experience under their belt.
