Chinese Shar-Pei

Height: 18-20 inches
Weight: 45-60 pounds
The Chinese Shar-Pei is a distinctive and ancient breed originating from China's Guangdong province. Known for its loose, wrinkled skin and unique "hippopotamus" muzzle, the Shar-Pei is medium-sized with a broad, square head, small, sunken eyes, and a short, bristly coat that comes in various colors such as fawn, cream, red, and blue. Originally bred for hunting and fighting, their wrinkles served as protection against predators. Despite their rugged appearance, Shar-Peis are loyal, affectionate, and devoted companions, forming strong bonds with their families. They exhibit a calm and independent nature, requiring firm yet gentle training from experienced dog owners to harness their potential. While they may be aloof with strangers, Shar-Peis typically get along well with children and other pets when properly socialized. Due to their short coat, they require minimal grooming, though regular maintenance of their skin folds is essential to prevent skin infections. Shar-Peis thrive in homes with experienced owners who can provide structured training, ample socialization, and a loving environment that appreciates their unique qualities and respects their independent spirit. Shar-Pei are strong, regal, independent guardians famous for intelligence and loyalty. They are suspicious of strangers and other dogs. Shar-Pei are serene dogs, but they will meet a perceived threat with tenacity and vigor. Early training and socialization are essential - a dominant adult Shar-Pei without them is a serious problem waiting to happen.
